Headings
Remarks This painting is only known from an old photograph in the archives of Lily Goovaerts. The photograph is pasted on cardboard bearing the caption: 'Junge Dame aus Hamburg'. Between 1898 and 1912 Henri Goovaerts regularly stays in Hamburg to make paintings on commission. Goovaerts gets these commisions mainly through mediation of Dr. Hermann Schmitz, a wealthy art lover and senior official of the State of Hamburg, whom he got to know during his study tour in Italy. According to the biographical sketch on Henri Goovaerts written by his wife Lily in 1947, Goovaerts painted a portrait of a young lady in 1899 in Hamburg (biographical sketch in archive of Lily Goovaerts).
